Inside dust jacket
Present-day students of the steam locomotive will welcome the publication of this collection of paintings of railway engines from various countries by the late H. M. Le Fleming. This volume contains 92 that were made available to The Institution of Mechanical Engineers for publication, as a memorial, by Le Fleming's widow. Le Fleming possessed a rare combination of artistic ability with a high level of achievement as a locomotive engineer. Acute powers, of observation, coupled with sound professional training, enabled Le Fleming to record both the accurate mechanical detail of locomotives he encountered during his extensive travels, and appreciate the thought that had developed the aesthetic qualities of their design. The result provides a valuable record of the age of steam. Le Fleming described the paintings as `locomotive portraits'. No attempt was made to record their sometimes dirty condition and dismal surroundings; rather, they are shown as they should be remembered, clean, finished, and doing the work they were intended to do in their typical surroundings. Nearly half the paintings are of British locomotives, and the Great Western Railway has a lion's share of representation. The remaining paintings depict machines, many of them rare and highly characteristic, from the United States, Germany, Austria, France, Sweden, Norway, and other countries.
