VARIETY IS THE SPICE of the Municipal Railway of San Francisco. The Muni has always boasted a wondrous variety of equipment, and changing times have only worked to enhance the bewildering assortment of streetcars, cable cars, trolley coaches, motor coaches and work equipment to be found on the property.
The Muni was, for the most part, a streetcar system with feeder buses until the early 1940s when trolley coaches were added in small numbers. With the great merger of 1944, combining the Muni with the privately owned Market Street Railway, came cable cars and a much larger bus fleet.
Postwar modernization brought an avalanche of White buses and trolley coaches, a shrinking of the streetcar network, threats to the cable cars, and PCC cars taking over the remaining rail lines. Diesel coaches replaced the gasoline-powered Whites and when the faithful MarmonHerrington, St. Louis, and Fageol Twin Coaches gave out, they were replaced with Flyer electrics from Canada.
