INTRODUCTION
This is the seventeenth annual edition of the INDEX TO HOW TO DO IT INFORMATION. Begun in 1963, as an index to nine magazines, the INDEX has grown so that the 1979 edition includes sixty magazines, nine of which are new this year. A complete listing of all magazines included, along with the names and addresses of the publishers, is given on the following pages. Magazines included in the INDEX are chosen because they traditionally have "how-to" articles, and because they are magazines that libraries, craftsmen, hobbyists, and do-it-yourselfers subscribe to and keep. Therefore, the INDEX is a single, easy-to-use guide to the most popular titles.
In this INDEX, "how-to" includes information, instructions, plans, suggestions and tips on how to solve and prevent problems, to build and construct objects and to pursue a craft or hobby. Major areas of emphasis include Arts and Crafts, Astronomy, Automobiles, Computers, Electronics, Fiber Arts, Furniture, Hi-Fi and Stereo, Hobbies, House and Home, Lapidary, Photography, Radio, Sports, Television, Tools, Toys and Games, and Woodworking.
The INDEX is arranged in alphabetical order by the subject covered in each article. If an article covers more than one subject, then it is repeated under all appropriate subject headings. Cross references guide the user from related subjects to other subject headings where additional material will be found. There are two types of cross references. "See" references indicate that all material on that subject will be found under a different subject heading. "See Also" references indicate that additional material which may be of interest will be found under another subject heading.
Following each subject heading, the user will find entries which consist of a descriptive statement about the article, the name of the magazine, the issue date of the magazine and the page on which the article begins. Entry statements are not usually the title of the article. They are brief descriptions of the article or project. Under each subject heading, the entries are arranged by magazine and then by date. Exceptions to date order are: (1) articles that are part of a series are usually grouped together, and (2) corrections and additional information published in later issues are listed with the original article. Occasionally, the picture and description of a project, the instructions, and the pattern are on widely separated pages. In this case, multiple page numbers are given.
Articles that do not contain complete plans or step-by-step instructions are noted by the use of a limiting phrase in the entry. For example, "Photo shows...", or "Tips on...",indicate incomplete instructions. Projects of unusual difficulty or which require special tools and techniques are noted. If the article gives an estimated cost for the project, this is noted in the entry.
The compilers of the INDEX hope that it becomes your guide to many worthwhile and pleasurable pursuits. Suggestions for other magazines or subject areas that you would like to see included are most welcome.
