Introduction
The General Electric Company, one of the world's largest and best-known industrial enterprises, is on the threshold of its centennial of the pioneering and building the first electric locomotive. The electric locomotive later permitted GE to evolve and build the first diesel-electric locomotive followed about two decades later by the first turbine locomotive. These are major firsts in locomotive history. The General Electric Company and its licencees have built well in excess of 10,000 locomotives, most of which were constructed for mainline use worldwide.
This publication has been planned to concisely define, chronologically, the most significant events in GE locomotive history  and supplement this with 400 specially selected builders photographs.
