Index 206

Ever since the immortal steam-powered Rocket took to the rails in the late 1820s, engineers and scientists have been researching and experimenting with alternative forms of rail power. Although steam reigned supreme for decades, electric and diesel traction were hard on its heels, followed by various other forms of traction, such as gas-turbine, steamturbine-electric, even flywheel. Not least among the items which have had to change with the new forms of driving power, and with higher speeds achieved, have been the very shapes of the locomotives, or power units.
This splendidly illustrated book emphasises these interesting variations, using fabulous full-color artwork and a host of rare and dramatic photographs to present the historical development of modern international rail power from 1879 to the present day. Along the way are depicted the earliest simple but exciting electric locomotives running long before national electric supply networks existed, through the tremendously dynamic influence of America's General Motors and their mass-production methods introduced in the 1930s, up to the high speed record-breaking powered "trainsets" which now carry passengers from city to city at over 160 miles per hour (260km/h).
The immensely experienced authors lucidly describe each impressive locomotive-combining thousands of facts and details of historical record into highly readable accounts-so that the most avid rail enthusiast and the casual observer alike will find equal fascination in each of almost 150 locomotive entries.
This handsome volume will be enjoyed as much as its companion, Salamander's "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of the World's Steam Passenger Locomotives".
