Big orange cars with those distinctive arch-window fronts, rolling across the Illinois prairie under trolley wire . . . PCC trains swooping into St. Louis across the Mighty Mississippi . . . interurban "streamliners" serving the Land of Lincoln on borrowed time.
All this and trolley freight, steam, a forlorn branch-line railbus and it actually lasted into the 1950s! This was Illinois Terminal, an interurban time warp.
We're pleased to be able to offer this, the long-awaited history of the Illinois Traction System by Paul String-ham. Paul traces this amazing railroad right back to its earliest days, goes smoothly forward to the end of electric operations in 1958, and wraps it up with some of the finest traction photography you'll ever see, ably assisted by Bill Janssen and others.
Included, of course, are rosters, system map, and marvelous ITS railroadiana in color and black & white. And there's a nice color photo section, as well.
