TRAINS OF THE FUTURE47
Introduction
Fifty years ago, seeing an airplane was an occa sion for much excitement. People ran outdoors to catch a glimpse of a plane passing overhead. Not many years before that, a similar excitement was aroused by the appearance of an automobile. It was a strange and unexpected sight to behold. And fifty years before that, the railroad was an almost unbelievable new mode of transportation. This How and Why Wonder Book of Trains and Railroads will help you relive those early days, as well as learn about recent developments.
From slow beginnings in the early 1800's to phenomenal growth after the 1850's, the railroad played a major part in the economic growth of our nation. For a hundred years or more, it was the most important means of transportation. In recent years, use of the automobile, bus, and air- plane has become more popular. and trains are used less for passenger travel. But the great variety of ways the railroads are useful means they will continue to be an important part of our national transportation system for many years to come.
Did you ever ride on a train? Strange as it may seem, many parents and schools make a special occasion of taking children for a train ride to be sure they have the experience. If you are under fifteen, the chances are great that you have not ridden a train. Even so, every educated boy and girl should understand the importance of trains in the history and growth of our country. This How and Why Wonder Book of Trains and Railroads brings that knowledge to the reader. From the standpoint of history, technology, and engineering, the book is a useful addition to the school and home library.
