An illustrated guide to the grand and architecturally significant homes of California's Gold Country.
A trip along California's Highway 49 is a journey to another time, as well as to another place. The highway takes you into the land of the Gold Rush, where the forty-niners sought their fortunes. Most who came to this place in the middle of the nineteenth century left empty-handed. Others stayed to build homes and communities.
This book is a fascinating exploration of the Gold Country. It focuses on the homes built between 1850 and 1900-structures whose architectural variety and often-elaborate grandeur were made possible by the affluence of the gold-rich region. Houses of Gold tours the lovely towns along Highway 49, pausing to examine closely many impressive examples of architecture accurately reflecting both the dignity and the exuberance of a bygone era.
John Carden Campbell is eminently qualified to write convincingly about the architectural heritage of Gold Country California. An authority on building design and decoration, he has been involved in the area's preservation and restoration movement for more than twenty years. In 1957 he purchased and restored an 1853 Greek Revival house in Mokelumne Hill. He owns and is restoring three Gold Rush brick buildings in Nevada City. His book is a most felicitous combination of acknowledged expertise, personal experience, and ardent concern for the topic.
The vivid pictures and detailed accounts in Houses of Gold will make readers who have never been to Gold Rush Country feel they know it intimately-and may well encourage them to visit and explore the region. And, of course, those who travel along Highway 49 will find the hook's magnificent descriptions invaluable in locating and appreciating the area's architectural and historical high points.
Houses of Gold belongs in the library of anyone who respects solid craftsmanship and good design, and who believes in preserving the irreplaceable art, artifacts, and architecture of the past.
