Hobokens Lackawanna Terminal by Theodore Scull
Hoboken could be variously described as an island, the end of the line and a way station to someplace else at almost any period in its nearly 350 years of recorded history.
Geographically, the Hudson River vast tidal marsh lands and towering palisades defined the place separating Hoboken from the interior, from the other river landings to the north and south and from Manhattan Island, Hoboken's main focus and impetus for rapid development.
On the east, the river remained Hoboken's most visible boundary even after the arrival of the cross-Hudson ferries and the construction of the vehicular and railway tunnels. From the west, roads crossed the swamps and railways tunneled under the palisades ending Hoboken's relative isolation. They would eventually create man-made boundaries, with sprawling railroad yards to the south and sweeping highway approaches to the Lincoln Tunnel to the north. Hoboken remained a kind of island roughly a mile square.
As a major transportation center Hoboken became an important place where people began and ended their train journeys, ferry rides, ocean liner voyages and car and bus trips. While local Hobokenites greatly benefited from the highly developed riverfront, rail and road network, the vast majority of passengers were simply passing through, to and from New York.
