The HO Model Railroading Handbook by Robert Schleicher Build an exciting HO Layout the easy inexpensive way.   Soft Cover 1983 220 pages  indexed
THE only difference between a set of toy trains and a real railroad in miniature is your own state of mind. If that surprises you, you are not alone. If you thought the difference between the two might be the scenery, the number of track switches, or the size of the layout, you are right, because that's the way it appears to the eye. When you look at the illustrations on these pages and in the catalogs and magazines, you will see all the things that can make a model railroad. Even the most realistic layout can still be seen as a toy train set if those who built it and operate it think of it as only an "adult toy" or a "grownup plaything." That is why your state of mind is important, and if you become totally involved, and if you can convince yourself that you are creating and operating a real railroad in miniature, then you really are doing just that. Of course your particular railroad will not have many of the problems that a real one has, so in a sense it's still a "model." But keep in mind that it can be a "perfect" model, or replica, of the real thing.
Creating a real railroad in miniature is an art: Just like any other artform, such as painting or sculpture, it requires skill and imagination. In effect, you become an artist because your "technique" and "style" combine to establish your own personal signature. In this book you will find explanations, descriptions, and advice on how to apply exactly the art of model railroading to your toy trains and how to create a layout that is fine enough to be classified as art.
A Brief History of the Hobby
Model railroading has been a hobby for at least as long as toy trains have been made, and that's an incredible one hundred years! Tens of thousands of true railroads in miniature have been built during that time, and the men and the women who built them have learned some very cunning tricks. Many of those tricks are collected and described for you on these pages.
The pioneer model railroaders had a difficult time because they had to go through the painstaking process of building every piece of their railroads. Imagine how few part-time artists there would be if they had to make their own paints and stretch their own canvases.
