THE excellent response by model railroad fans to our three earlier cutout books and changing hobby needs has prompted the editors of RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTS-
MAN to substantially revise one of its earlier books, HO SCALE CUTOUTS, so as more to fit the needs of the growing number of HO Motoring enthusiasts while at the same time making it possibly even more useful to HO model railroad fans. HO CUTOUT CITY is designed to create a basic metropolis at very low cost for both HO motoring and HO railroading, with the emphasis on highway structures and related buildings. Such buildings of a railroad nature as are included are such as would be encountered by the motorist or trucker: railroad crossing gates, depot, and rail-truck terminal.
Assembly of the various buildings is simple. Use scissors or a sharp modeling knife to cut the many pieces apart. We would recommend using a straight edge for all cuts to guide an X-Acto knife containing a No. 24 blade. Fast drying model cements (such as Ambroid, available at all hobby shops) make assembly easy. Avoid use of paste or slow drying glues. Do not smear any model cements on the printed sides as the solvents used in model cement will cause smudging of the printing inks used.
For best results, all buildings should be mounted on a base of wood or heavy matte board and many modelers will want to reinforce the interiors with wood strips. The flat or peaked roofs of a few structures have not been included because of space limitations, and because they are easily fashioned from bristol or Strathmore board. Paint in roof colors or cover with roofing paper, HO scale, available from most hobby shops. Roofs should overhang walls about 1/8".
Only the fronts are presented for the eight store shopping center. On small layouts, these can be placed against a wall for a 3-D effect. On larger layouts, use cement colored cardboard ( Strathmore board) and make the sides, rear wall, and roof. The stores should run about 4-5 inches deep.
Many will want to add extra detail to their completed buildings. Windows can be cut out, permitting interior lighting with small grain-of-wheat bulbs. Precision cut stripwood can also be used to add relief to outer wall. Paint such strips before carefully cementing in place.
Placement of the models on your layout is important. Sidewalks can be made of thick cardboard painted cement color (available from Floquil ). The gas station will look barren without workmen, cars, tires, oil drums, and price posters scattered about. Many stations offer green, blue, or other colored saving stamps. Many HO motoring fans have not as yet discovered that their local hobby shops offer literally thousands of scenic details that will make their layouts more realistic. Each issue of RAILROAD MODEL CRAFTSMAN Magazine lists many local hobby shops and also contains many suggestions for all HO fans. Other Carstens-Penn-Craft Books also offer suggestions for improving HO motoring and railroad layouts.
