The Southern Pacific Company is one of the largest railroads in the United States. Built on the dreams of five men a century ago, it grew from a tenuous steel filament across hostile plains into one of the largest privately owned rail transportation companies in the world. The Southern Pacific Railroad is 13,600 miles of rail line connecting the mouth of the Columbia River in the Pacific Northwest to the mouth of the Mississippi River on the Gulf of Mexico. It is, however, more than a railroad. It is a diversified transportation and land development company with holdings in petrochemical pipelines and telecommunications.
Southern Pacific is today the legacy of the men who tamed the Sierras, saved the Imperial Valley and united California with Texas and Oregon. Southern Pacific is men and women who built and perpetuated of steel so that others could build and futures in the Golden West.
