Partial Forward
The Philadelphia and Reading Railroad was one of the first major railroads built in the United States. Completed in 1842, it achieved immediate economic success in transporting anthracite from the Schuylkill coal field to tidewater at Philadelphia. Faced with the problems of engineering, constructing, financing and organizing a pioneer railroad, the Reading's solutions became an example for others to follow.
History of the Reading" by Jay V. Hare is a comprehensive written account detailing the history of the Reading Company, a prominent railroad system primarily operating in Pennsylvania, compiled by Jay V. Hare, who was once the Secretary of the Reading Company; considered a key source for understanding the development and operations of the railroad throughout its lifespan
