FOREWORD
As first conceived, this New York subway history would have covered all facets of rapid transit in New York City. However, it soon became obvious that such a work would be cumbersome and expensive. Further, it would lose the interest of those interested in any particular aspect of the system's history.
Consequently, it was decided to slant the work toward a general interest theme with sufficient specifics to hold the attention of the layman. Detailed information on finances, politics and law has been generally omitted.
In an attempt to hold costs down and keep a somewhat complex story as simple as possible, a decision was made to divide the work into three parts. This section, the first part, includes the history of the IRT and Manhattan Co. lines, as well as some information on early lines. A forthcoming volume will include the Brooklyn elevated lines, the BRT/BMT subway through the merger of the BMT and IND lines in 1967. A third and final part will trace the development of a separate city operated Independent system from the 1920's, the takeover of the other companies, as well as various policies which affected the other lines (which were discussed in parts I and II).
In researching this field, over 1500 microfilmed newspaper articles were consulted, as well as some 150 reports of the private companies, city and state commissions and authorities.
While many people made helpful comments or suggestions, we would like to give special thanks to the following:Donald W. Harold, for making available photographs, historical material and many anecdotes.
