DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
After the Civil War the L & N took the lead among southern railroads in organizing a far-flung rail system. As the road expanded, settlers migrated, bringing new lands under cultivation, opening industries and mines. Two of its early leaders played an important role in its success: Albert Fink, who formulated the post-Civil War policy based on expansion and stabilization, and Milton Smith, who influenced the course of the system's destiny more than any other man except Fink. The death of "Old Curmudgeon" Smith, the strenuous opponent of federal interference, ended the most dynamic period of the company's history and symbolized the closing of an era -the Golden Age of American Railroads.
During World War I came the government take-over of the roads under the Railroad Control Act, and after the Armistice there were difficult postwar adjustments. Later, the Depression followed, with the L & N weathering the storm intact as other systems crashed into receivership. There were other troubled times-the great Ohio River flood in 1937, which left chaos in its wake, and the discouraging years of World War II. After the war, however, there was a dramatic transformation, although accompanied by rampant inflation and violent clashes with labor.
The L & N has always attracted strong leaders, and its is the most efficient administration of any southern road, with the most elaborate and sophisticated accounting system. A testimony to its strength is that, alone among major southern railroads, the L & N has survived external economic crises and internal dissensions without ever succumbing to default, receivership, or reorganization.
Maury Klein covers such events as the railway's battle over conversion to standard gauge, the rate war, safety innovations; the development of new locomotives, freight, passenger, and specialized cars; the inauguration by the L & N of "name" passenger runs; and also tells of the part played by the system in politics at the local, state, and national levels. A lengthy Epilogue sums up the operation as the road began its second century, and new tactics, techniques, and technology emerged.
History of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad is delightfully readable as well as impeccably researched. While the history of the line is unique, the L & N's development accurately reflects the basic growth pattern for most southern rail systems and illuminates the strenuous adjustments railroads had to make to the new competitive conditions of the automotive and airplane age.

MAURY KLEIN, associate professor of history at the University of Rhode Island, is the author of The Great Richmond Terminal and has had several articles published in scholarly journals, among them the American Historical Review and American History Illustrated.
