The History Of North American Railroads By Bill Yenne Dust Jacket Copyright 1986 241 Pages
America's pioneer railroad, the Baltimore and Ohio. was chartered in 1827. and Americans began building locomotives in 1830. It was in that year that the Best Friend of Charleston steamed into the annals of history as the first full-sized locomotive to offer regular passenger service in North America and to replace the horse-drawn vehicle. Within five years 200 railroad companies had sprouted in the United States and 1000 miles of track had been laid across the East Coast. The completion of the first transcontinental rail line across the US and Canada in the late 1880s ushered in a bright new era of expansion and growth for both countries.
In the midst of these widespread changes, the evolution of the locomotive has been gradual and few successful developments have been sufficiently dramatic to merit the term 'revolutionary: One such advance was the introduction of the diesel locomotive, which replaced the steam-driven locomotive entirely by the mid-1950s. Another milestone was the installation of electric power. The twentieth century brought many years of glory and profit but also of struggle for the railroad industry in the face of stiff competition from cars, trucks, buses and airplanes. In order to survive, railways were forced to reorganize and reequip to regain their hold, and gradually they have been able to establish a new niche for themselves in today's fast-moving world.
The History of North American Railroads traces the origins of railroading in the US and Canada and the development of the industry over the last century and a half. It examines the growth periods and the times of decline in both passenger and freight service as well as the effects of mergers. monopolies and government regulation. The technological advances as well as the individuals, notorious and otherwise, who figured prominently in railroading are also featured in this story of an industry that continues to play a significant role in serving our modern needs.
