DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Ralph Clark draughted his first railway layout plan one hot afternoon in July 1935 while on a cycling holiday in Wales. But it was not until after the end of the 2nd World War that the idea of drawing station plans (on site) and starting a collection of them evolved.
By 1947 he had decided to offer some of the plans to the railway enthusiast in the form of a small booklet, and invested money in the publication of "Rail & Platform Plans of British Stations", together with three similar booklets of station illustrations covering the West Country, the South-East, and Wales. He saw his money back but little profit, and he was told by a friend that he was twenty-five years ahead of his time. In 1972, while standing at our stall at a Great Western Society "Open Day" at Didcot, his memory suddenly recalled the little layout book of the late 1940's, and another idea took shape. The first book of "Great Western Stations" was the result.
Although the study of railways has always been his abiding interest, professionally and otherwise, his life has not been without adventure. In the mid-1930's he volunteered for a short-service commission in the R.A.F., but today prefers to keep both feet on the ground. He found more active service in plain clothes than he did previously in uniform, and took a fair share of wartime "close-shaves".
He takes a strong interest in the study of theology, philosophy, family and local history, and takes a broad and uncommitted view of politics.
For fourteen years he wrote the leading article in an industrial weekly magazine, was a columnist for a short time, and has written railway articles and paragraphs. Balancing his devotion to writing about G.W. Stations, he is the owner of an extensive garden model railway (G.W.!) from which he derives more pleasure at seeing others enjoying it than operating it on his own.
