Ever since the Rainhill Locomotive Trials in 1829, the story has revolved around one speed record after another. Companies competed to provide the fastest service between two points, whether it was London and Edinburgh or New York and Chicago. And when the rail operators found themselves having to compete with the airlines for passenger traffic, the great race was on. For some years the Tokaido line in Japan led the way in high speed rail travel. Now research and development continue, and an era of even faster rail travel is to come.
