About the book
A powerful journey of a black mans dreams, dilemmas, fears and perseverance.
What is was really like to deliver a standard of excellence while trying to survive and earn a living under Jim Crow segregation laws?
At the time of this printing I am 95 years old. I was born March 25, 1914. I am not a novelist and I did not attend college for that matter. My desire was to attend college; but, I chose to work to help support my lovely mother, which I did proudly. I did however, upon entering Jefferson High School in 1931, take it upon myself to learn a word a day from the dictionary.
I lived through segregation, Jim Crow and the depression. I've lived through 16 presidents (I'm pleased about president Obama) and served in WWII. I remember when there was no television, just radios. The first time I saw a show on television was at one of the neighbors. I saw a boxing match of Jack Johnson. We were very excited. All in all, things have changed so much, and I thank the Good Lord for allowing me the opportunity to see as much as I have.
I wrote "Hey boy! Hey George!" in 21 days, while waiting to be selected for jury duty. That was in 1978. It has taken me quite a while to release this book, thanks to the help of my youngest daughter, Carla.
"Hey boy! Hey George!" chronicles my days as a young adult working as a Pullman porter until was drafted in WWII at age 29.
I hope this book provides you with a glimpse into the culture of the Pullman porter and into an era far different from today. Enjoy the days of Yore!
