The Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (P&R) was incorporated in 1833 with the sole purpose of constructing a railroad from the ports of Philadelphia to the coal of Pottsville. The City of Reading happened to be in the middle. What more logical location could there be to centralize their operations than in Reading? Just as the City of Reading served as the center of the Railroad, the Railroad served as the center of Reading. The Railroad was the key to the city's economic, social, industrial growth. Not only did the Railroad become the geographical center of the city, it became the center of the city's life.
Even though the City of Reading was not the corporate headquarters for the P&R or the Reading Railroad (Philadelphia was), the Railroad decided to invest millions in the city by making it home to their main shops. Today, many people know only these Railroad shops as the main contribution of the P&R to the City of Reading. However, there was a lot more to the Reading in Reading than its shops. Examples are the commodious Outer Station, and the Swinging Bridge built by word-renowned engineer John Roebling. This book will explore the intracite relationship between the City of Reading, Pennsylvania and the P&R and Reading Railroads. This publication also servers as a commemorative to the celebration of the City of Reading's 250th birthday. The City would have had a far different history had the P&R never been built.
