DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
From End o' Way, the Leimbach family's sprawling grain and vegetable farm near Vermilion, Ohio, comes this wonderful new collection of essays celebrating the joys and trials of farm living.
Drawing on her experiences as a longtime farm wife as well as a traveling speaker, mother, and active citizen, Patricia Leimbach writes with homespun humor, introspection, and unmistakable enthusiasm about everyday life in a small community.
Harvest of Bittersweet represents two years -eight seasons-of her middle age, a time during which she became a grandmother and lost a son. Her subjects include the mid-August bedlam of a pick-your-own operation; the perennial comedy played out between wife and parts man at the farm implement store; hosting the annual church picnic; meditations on a house auction; the peculiar romance of fruits and vegetables for one who has been intimately involved with them for a lifetime; how to wallpaper a room with your spouse and still stay married; the magic of a river valley in a heavy snowfall; the hospital vigil preceding a son's death. A number of the essays relay impressions of places and farm people Leimbach has visited on the speaking circuit, from a tumbleweed town in western Kansas to The Homestead in Hot Springs, Virginia. Whatever her topic, Patricia Leimbach's bittersweet, often irreverent descriptions reveal a quiet pride and profound joy in country life.
