Partial Introduction
This book has been written to provide a single source of facts and information on each of the 127 Class I railroads. These railroads comprise 181,311' miles of road, or about 81 per cent of the total U.S. rail mileage. A description of each railroad, highlighting information that is prominent or of unusual interest, is accompanied with maps and photographs.
The need for this book was recognized by the author whose own experience in gathering information on individual roads has been made difficult by having to dig into dozens of different sources. This need is emphasized by the great volume of inquiries that are sent to the railroads themselves, to railway publications, and to railroad associations and libraries. The book is current, for all the statistics are based on 1950  and 1949 where comparative), the latest full year, at time of publication, for which complete figures were available.
