Model railroading is an intensely individualistic hobby. Each of us has his own ideas on how to do this and that and on what he wants to do. Perhaps this is the secret of the hobby's rapid growth. It allows full play for each man's ideas and plans.
Because of this very individualistic characteristic it is all the harder to write a good book, or even a good article, on model railroading. Instructions and advice cannot be too specific, for what suits me will not suit you. The way I build a locomotive will not be the way you build a locomotive. The gauge I use may even be different from that which you use. My layout may not only fit in a different space, but be designed with entirely different objectives in view.
A handbook on model railroading, such as this, can be at best not a manual of specific instructions, for such would suit only a very few, but a general discussion of the various courses of action, a book of ideas. That is just what this volume is, and we are glad to present it to the field.
