IN miniature railroading there is an exciting fascination for every boy, whether he is interested in engineering, electricity, mechanics, architecture, showmanship, or in none of these, but is just wholesome Young America pulling at the leash and thrilling to the dramatic action of churning locomotive drive rods, to the hurtling speed of the racing streamliner and to the power, force and tireless energy of the puffing freighter.
This book is written and compiled for boys of all ages, to bring within their reach the essence and spirit of railroading; to enable them to develop around their own sets of train and track, by means of their own handiwork, a complete system on which their models will be able to duplicate everything that real trains do-in the same efficient, business like, methodical manner.
To begin is the only problem for, once begun, this is an inspiring, absorbing hobby that is never left. The railroad is planned, construction is started, but the system is never finished, for imagination speeds on ahead of the builder to explore new fields for conquest, new branch lines to be added, freight yards to be extended, the main line to be double-tracked, new signal or control systems to be installed, facilities at the locomotive terminal to be improved, a mountain divison, elevated track, bridges, tunnels, lakes, a waterfall! The march ahead is endless but every step of the way brings increased opportunities for train operations and each job finished well delivers special thrill and satisfaction.
To begin a model railroad calls for a set of trains and space where a table or bench may be built and on which track may be fixed permanently. Two things are important. The first is that the track must be raised off the floor on a fixture that brings it to waist-height, at least. The second important thing is that the space provided must be available permanently for the purpose. Operating trains on the floor of a drawing room may be a splendid idea during a holiday, but a week or a month later the drawing room or living room will be required for other purposes and projected ideas of a model empire will be packed away on the shelf with good, old No. 700 and its string of cars and circle of track.
It may not be easy to obtain space for your model, but remember, real railroads once had the same trouble.
If you live in a house, there is the attic and the basement which might be used to solve the space problem. If you live in an apartment, there is "00" gauge, the space-saving, half-size, scale model equipment. A good "00" gauge layout can be built on a ping-pong table and an elaborate, complicated system will fit into a spare room,
This book is written in chapters and the chapters are placed in sequence as each subject might normally arise.
After you have determined to become a full-fledged model railroader and have found suitable space for your project, the next step is to decide which gauge track you will use-"0" gauge which is quarter-inch scale, or "00" gauge which is 5/32-inch scale. In "0" gauge a greater variety, of equipment is available. In "00" gauge a much more extensive road can be reproduced in the same given space.
After the question of space and gauge have been settled, get busy at once on a layout and tables for it. From then on you are a model railroader and, before you, the track stretches straight to Wonderland, gleaming with excitement! All-aboard!
