Guide to the Main Exhibits
The Illawarra Light Railway Museum Society Ltd. was established in February 1972. The main objects of association are:-
* To establish a Light Railway Museum in Albion Park N.S.W.
*For public exhibition of railway locomotives, railway rolling stock, plant, equipment and all related accessories.
*For the education of the public in the mechanics, manufacture and operations of the steam engine and other mechanical devices in an historical and industrial context.
*To inform the public in the use of railways and tramways for industrial and other purposes in the Illawarra Region of New South Wales in particular, and throughout Australia generally.
The lease for the museum site at the southern end of Albion Park airport was approved by Shellharbour Council in February 1974 and track laying commenced three months later.
The first operating open day was held on 12th April 1975 using internal combustion locos. These activities continued from time to time until 11th February 1979 when regular public operating days using steam locomotives commenced.
The Illawarra Light Railway Museum operates approximately on 16 to 18 days each year. From 1979 to 1991 almost 160,000 visitors have been carried on the Museum Railway.
A well-equipped machine shop has been developed at the museum. This can handle all light and most heavy repairs. A separate car builder's workshop is being currently developed. Powered rail fabricating tools and presses, together with forge and gas cutting equipment are on hand enabling museum members to construct all track units including points and crossings.
Open day details appear elsewhere in this "Guide". Admission to the museum car park and picnic area is free. A small charge is made for railway and tram rides. "All Day" as well as individual ride tickets are available.
