The first Electro-Motive Corp. E units of the late 1930s provided the power for a new era of lightweight, streamlined, colorful passenger trains. They helped pave the way for the first road freight diesel, the FT, which showed that diesels could handle heavy freight service as well. By the time EMD built the last of its streamlined E and F unit diesels in 1964. steam was gone. However, the reign of E and F units was
soon over, as by the 1970s, road switchers and higher-horsepower locomotives were replacing them, just as
Es and Fs had replaced steam.
