ABOUT THE BOOK
THIS review of the growth and development of The Pennsylvania Railroad Company was begun some years ago, and represents the use, to a large extent, of leisure hours. Its preparation was inspired by a desire to know more about how the Company grew to its present powerful position in the field of transportation. As this information was not available in condensed form or chronological order, it was necessary to go back to the origin of the Company, over 80 years ago, and resort very largely to its Annual Reports to secure the data.
No references are made to many minor events, which are inseparable from the growth of every large corporation, the purpose being to simply record the more important facts. To have done otherwise would have considerably enlarged the work without correspondingly adding to its value to those interested in obtaining a brief account of the inception and growth of a really great transportation system.
I gratefully acknowledge the helpful suggestions received from the various Departments.
