INTRODUCTION
Writing this book first came to mind in 1967 at which time the author kiddingly mentioned he had an idea of writing such an epistle while fresh in one's mind. Much to his surprise, it was not taken in a jokingly manner but rather the feeling of co-workers and "so-called" outsiders was "why not?" Hence the seed was planted and an outline was formed. Time was against me though as we were a new railroad and we were far from out of the woods. One working 50 - 80 hours a week left little time for book writing, wife, hobbies or much else except 4' 81/2" gauge (more or less) known as the Green Mountain Railroad Corporation (GMRC).
You might like to know a bit of my background. Started with the Railway Express Agency, Inc. and worked up to Agent; during one lay off, bought (with the bank of course) a tractor trailer and was hauler for Middle Atlantic Transportation Co. hauling general freight between the East and Midwest (a railroad man no less); drove tank trailer for an oil firm; drove construction machinery for a small contractor; went to New Haven Railroad and worked up to General Agent and then to GMRC to set up freight divisions, rates, route type of work for operations and stayed until a severe heart attack in 1981 finished my working career. Oh yes! Took one year's leave of absence to work for New England Apple Products as Traffic Manager in charge of warehousing of their product, shipping and maintenance of all trucks and equipment, still in the background of course, GMRC. So much for this incidental info.
This book does not nor can it take into account all aspects of our railroad. Space, health and time will not permit it and perhaps this is just as well for reasons known by some. Hopefully I will not neglect any facet of our railroad but understand the writer was not everywhere at once even though he was named "Hawkeye" as well as the "Ogre of Chester Depot." I have had to depend upon many people to jar my memory on some of our happenings. Some of this will be in the first person, otherwise known as "Hawkeye," to save space and for ease in writing.
Finally, I am no literary genius. This book is in my own style, having no education on such matters, but hopefully you will like it and have as much enjoyment reading it as I had dictating it to my wife.
