Welcome to the first edition of Great Railroad Photography! The love of railroads and photography have gone hand-in-hand since the two technologies came together in the mid-1800s. Since that time railroad photography has evolved, passing from black & white negatives to color slides and now on to digital. Each step brought out new opportunities, and creative photographers were always willing to push the boundaries of great photography outward. The explosion of digital photography in the past decade has seen creativity grow in ways we could not have anticipated even at the turn of the 21st Century.
In this volume you'll find some of our favorite creative photography from some of our favorite photographers. We start off with Howard Ande's discussion on why we take railroad photographs in the first place. Steve Crise explains how he works with century-old steam locomotives and new photographic techniques to keep himself challenged, while Scott Lothes looks at the contrasting chronology of Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. We look at fan favorites such as the Clinchfield and the Milwaukee Road through the lenses of Ron Flanary and Karl Zimmermann, respectively. Keith Burgess and Kevin Scanlon work with low-level and no-level light to capture dramatic scenes. And Elrond Lawrence uses his camera and talent to find the remnants of the Santa Fe in a BNSF world.
The final package you hold in your hands is a strong cross-section of where great railroad photography has been in the last few decades and where it is going. You don't know how much inspiration I got from gathering these stories and putting them together. My hope is that you will feel similarly inspired.
