DETROIT & TOLEDO SHORE LINE RAILROAD . . . 119
DETROIT TERMINAL RAILROAD126
Mention Grand Trunk Western and I visualize high-speed, morning, midday, and overnight passenger train service between Toronto and Chicago (with connecting service at Durand for Detroit). Trains pulled by a pair of torpedo-tubed GP9's, complete with heavy-weight coach, dining, lounge, and sleeping car service. Trains bearing names like THE MAPLE LEAF, THE INTERNATIONAL, and the MOH vw K. I also think of black Alco switchers and ofive green EMD switchers trimmed with parent Canadian National's maple leaf. I reminisce about the Milwaukee Jet. roundhouse near Detroit where the last vestiges of steam operated on commuter trains between Pontiac and Detroit. This route was where steam generator-equipped GP9's and GP18's pulled GTW Pontiac Locals tinder GTW, and later orange and gray GP's toiled with suburban trains, operated by SEMTA (Southeastern Michigan Transportation Authority) until 1983. I remember the huge shops and office complex at Battle Creek, MI and the Durand Station where the main track crossing was protected by a swing gate, signals, an operator, and train order signals. Finally, I think about the GT logo fashioned after parent CN's "wet noodle" trademark.
