PREFACE
This is not a history of sixty four miles of track, ties and track spikes. It is a recognition of the people, events, circumstances, culture and equipment that went into the daily operation of this railroad. It became a part of a large system but was not swallowed by the system. In fact, the system was supported by the notoriety provided by this line.
Cowboys, miners, presidents and kings all were a part of this railroad. Yet these were only a few of the many kinds of people that built, worked for, worked around, worked with, depended on, rode on, or carried people and goods from point A to point B. It was alive from the start. It was alive in the hearts of the people around it. And when it shut down as a result of dwindling revenues, it never really died. It continued to live in the memories of those who were close to it.
As it is with people who lie in the sun, the railway merely slept. And now, its sleep is over. The Grand Canyon Line is awake again and writing new history. New friends and memories are being made again. This is the way it should be.
