A shortline railroad belongs to the community it serves in a way no trunk line railroad ever can. Such a shortline was the Marcellus & Otisco Lake Railway, fondly called the "M&OL."
It prospered in its early years, but as trucks and improved highways invaded the scene, it began dying a slow death. Despite almost overwhelming financial troubles, its managers kept it running as long as they could until it could no longer he operated at a profit and it was abandoned.
This is the story of the M&OL's trials and tribulations, from its birth as a proposed electric railway to its ultimate abandonment.
