In 1808 Richard Trevithick put his experimental steam engine on trial, and it earned the name 'Catch-me-who-can'. However, it was not until 1825 that the first passenger-carrying railway opened, with George Stephenson at the controls of his own design 'Locomotion', taking honoured guests along the Stockton & Darlington Railway.
The world was quick to follow. The French Wagons-Lits company developed coaches which were unsurpassed in luxury, even for a journey to the Russian snows. The railways brought political unity to the German States, which had to cooperate for the first time in setting up an integrated network. The steep mountain ranges in Italy presented long-term problems to the engineers, as did the vast ranges and deserts in America, which was finally linked coast to coast.
Every continent developed its railway system, and although lions on  the line in Africa or deep public suspicion in China held up the train's progress for a time, the world was soon basking in the Golden Age of Railways.
This book follows the development of the railways all over the world up to the first world war, in which they played such a decisive role. It is richly illustrated with contemporary prints, photographs and engravings.
