The harnessing of steam power literally changed the world. Its history is the story of the marriage of engineering and entrepreneurial ingenuity that made transportation hugely profitable and newly luxurious. The Golden Age of Steam charts the development of steam power, and explores the revolutionary technology that changed the face of the world.
Steam-powered transportation made unreachable areas accessible across the world. Riverboats and steam engines made possible the settlement of the far reaches of the American West. Steam-powered ocean liners carried immigrants to the New World, and transported colonists to the far reaches of the British Empire. Steamboats and steam-powered locomotives swiftly transported perishable goods, opening up new and larger markets for farmers and merchants in Europe and the United States.
But things did not always proceed smoothly. Engine problems on steamboats created fires that devastated human life and personal fortunes. Hostile Native Americans, earthquakes, and floods beset the maiden voyage of Fulton's steamboat the New Orleans. Corruption schemes threatened the success of the Central Pacific and Eric Railroads. The tragic sinking of the"unsinkable" Titanic became a symbol of man's overweening ambition. Yet, in the end, steam power was unstoppable, and its astonishing legacy is with us still, in the very shape and function of the world today.
