INTRODUCTION
Most every state can lay claim to one or two railroads that have been historically indigenous to the social and economic background of the areas. Kentucky has its Louisville 8 Nashville. Indiana claims the Monon as its own.
Two Tennessee railroads must share such honors-the pioneer Nashville ES Chattanooga, later to become the Nashville, Chattanooga ES St. Louis: and the lamented Tennessee Central. While both of these lines headquartered in Nashville, their respective tentacles reached Harriman. Chattanooga. and Memphis: Gadsden. Alabama: and Hopkinsville. Paducah, and Hickman. Kentucky. Most of these trackages still exist under the banners of other owners.
But Tennessee also had colorful shorter routes along whose rights-of-way the sounds of locomotive whistles are forever stilled. Memories can bring to life the workings of the Oneida f4 Western, the Smoky Mountain, the Tennessee E? North Carolina, the Middle Tennessee. the 1.ittle River. and the Morgan f4 Fentress-just to mention a few. Perhaps this volume will find a responsive chord in the minds of historians and rail- buffs alike. who are interested in preserving the records of these carriers which in their day were vital to the communities they served.
A legion of nicknames surrounded these lines. At least one sobriquet-The Peuvine--was affectionately applied to three widely separated Tennessee Railroads. Tennessee also had her Dummy Line, her Jerkwater, and her Tweetsie. The latter term could only apply to the East Tennessee ES Western North Carolina, a little railroad whose very mention still raises an emotional response with rail fans everywhere.
As of October 1. 1975. Tennessee had abandoned 1.109.58 route miles of railroad (See ''Scope of Volume"). The state's all-time high of miles of railroad in operation was in 1920 when the figure was 4.078. This compares
