This book is not intended to be a complete history of railroads in Nebraska, but rather to give the flavor of the rail era in the state and guide the reader down lines that have been abandoned. Nebraska rail history is so extensive that various phases are covered in full volumes themselves. Many of these are listed in the bibliography section. Most of the Burlington divisions have been the subject of individual books, including Alfred J. Holck's on the Lincoln Division and those by Richard C. Kistler on the Wymore, McCook and Alliance divisions, the last of those in collaboration with the late Joseph C. Hardy. The late Bernard Corbin of Red Oak, Iowa, published several books on Burlington motive power and history, including one co-authored with Hardy.
