DUST JACKET INTRODUCITON:
In this marvelously illustrated look back at General Electric's landmark locomotives, Brian Solomon distills more than a century of information into a gallery celebrating a rich railroading heritage.
Beginning with the company's first tentative steps into electric propulsion and continuing on to today's behemoth diesel-electric locomotives, Solomon covers the breadth of GE motive power: the development and application of everything from long-lived electric S motors, ill-fated steam and gas turbines, the Milwaukee Road's "Little Joes," the famed "U-boats," the ubiquitous DASH lines, today's AC-traction diesels, and the modern streamlined GENESIS passenger locomotives.
Archival black-and-white images and color photography depict dozens of past and present railroads operating GE locomotives.
In addition to thoroughly explaining the performance capabilities of each model, Solomon explains the histories of GE locomotives in the context of contemporary competitors. Readers come to understand how DASH locomotives, for example, came to dominate the marketplace and incorporate microprocessor controls, as well as how GE's head-to-head competition with General Motors' Electro-Motive Division in the 1990s resulted in today's giant diesel-electric locomotives.
