Foreword
Gary, Indiana, is at the lower end of Lake Michigan, 26 miles southeast of Chicago. Sometimes called the "workshop of America'', the Calumet region within 16 miles of the center of Gary encompasses 25% of the steel production in the country and includes the largest single steel-producing facility, that of Inland Steel Company at Indiana Harbor. Altho the region's local transportation is now by bus, the city was once the center of several interurban and local street railways. People could travel from Gary to LaPorte, Chesterton, Valparaiso, Hobart, Crown Point, and Hammond on interurban cars operated by Gary Railways, Inc., or its predecessors. While Gary's last street car has given way to the rubber-tired vehicle, its links with the east and west are still by electric railroad service of the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad.
The purpose of this bulletin is to tell the complete story of Gary Railways, Inc., from its beginning in 1908 to the cessation of street car service in 1947. Every effort has been made to make this story as complete and accurate as possible. This could not have been accomplished without the kind cooperation of Mr. F. M. Kemp and Mr. J. W. Davies of Gary Railways, Inc.; it was only thru their patience and tolerance of our endless questions that all this material became available. We also wish to thank Mr. Ernest Sohn of Hobart, without whose fine memory we should never have untangled the story of Hobart operations. Much material was also checked against the standard references, including Electric Railway Journal, Poor's Public Utilities Manuals, and "Air Line News", published by the Goshen South Bend & Chicago Railroad. A special effort was made to obtain complete photo coverage, and again we must thank Messrs. Kemp and Davies whose files produced some of the most interesting items. Finally, a vote of thanks to all the others who have borne with us in making up this bulletin.
