Actually, I think his grandpa Beazley's Hamilton Railway Special is the perpetrator habitually reminding Doug Riddell to spill the beans on his improbable life of railroading and the absurd characters he's encountered.
For sure, there's a Damon Runyon complexion to a railroad, but extracting the most implausible suspects from the nooks and crannies in which they periodically and alternately practice interpersonal terror and slapstick demands a practical social anthropologist like Riddell. And did I mention his capacity to align words so that a frequently audible "gee whiz" might be sandwiched between raucous guffaws?
An element of Southwest Airlines' success is a written policy to tolerate and encourage individualism and creativity. Then there are railroads. How Riddell has survived a career among the dullard, doctrinaire denizens of railroad corporate offices amazes me. No matter.
Riddell is the first to explain-hell, recognize-the similarity among the symmetry of gymnastics, the training of an operatic tenor, and the discipline of commanding a locomotive.
I've never asked him, but I'm absolutely positive Riddell would confess to being more proud of his locomotive engineer's license than his college degree in communications.
Pull up a chair, a comfortable one, and sit a spell. If there's but a trace of railfan in your flesh, you ain't a goin' nowhere till you meet the chaotic cast of characters comprising Doug Riddell's two-decade obsession with, lust for, and madcap dash across the Seaboard, CSX, and Amtrak.
