The Friendly SOO by Leslie Suprey An Album of photographs of the SOO Line Railroad
Spiral bound approx. 21 single sided pages . Oversize Book approx 13 3/4 X 9 7/8 inches
The Soo Line operates 4,200 miles of main line track, extending from Chicago, west and north, serving seven Midwest states. It is principally a single-track railroad, with its main line extending from Chicago through Minneapolis and St. Paul to Portal. North Dakota, where it connects with the Canadian Pacific. It is a "Granger Road", a high percentage of its revenues derived from grain and grain products. It operates three "name" trains; "The Laker" between Chicago and Duluth-Superior; "The Winnipeger" between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Winnipeg. Its most famous, however, is the summer tourist train, "The Mountaineer," operating between the Twin Cities and the Pacific Northwest. This is a Soo-CP train operating over the Canadian Pacific from Portal, N. D., to Vancouver, B. C. "The Mountaineer" traverses the Canadian Rockies through Banff and Lake Louise, famous resort areas of Canada.
The Soo is well known for its fast freight service, its train miles per train hour ranking high among our Northwestern railroads. The three direct transfer points between the United States and Canada give the Soo a large volume of traffic to and from the Canadian Provinces.
The Soo Line operated for fifty years with all steam motive power. The future of steam on the Soo Line, like many other railroads, will be of short duration. At present it is being replaced by the more efficient Diesel-Electric locomotive. The now-modem Diesel-Electric may soon be replaced, or supplemented by a better gas-turbine-electric locomotive. It even may, in the far distant future, be powered by an atomic engine.
To many the replacement of the steam locomotive will mean something missing from the romance of railroading. This album is for those who wish a pictorial remembrance of steam railroading on the "Friendly Soo."
