We travel back to Franklin County during 1890 in northeastern Maine, when timber was king. The Phillips & Rangeley Railroad was the third interconnected, two-foot gauge line built since 1879 in Franklin County. In the chase for more timber, the Phillips & Rangeley would build two additional railroads - the Madrid Railroad and the Eustis Railroad. The Phillips & Rangeley carried thousands of
passengers per year to the Rangeley Lakes region, one of Maine's premier summer destinations. The Phillips & Rangeley Railroad was built not for passengers from "away," but because of the 25,000 acres of timber in
Redington Township. This story is as much about Redington and its mills and Franklin County as it is about the Phillips & Rangeley Railroad. It has a human
side, a funny and sometimes sad side, shady business dealings, and family intrigue with a twist. The use of hundreds of quotes gives a unique view of the people and
the region, along with the Phillips & Rangeley, as it was carved out of the Maine wilderness.
