Formation of the New England Railroad Systems A study of railroad combination in the nineteenth century by George Baker Hard Cover 1937  283 pages Indexed
THIS study in the subject of transportation endeavors to set forth when, how, and why railroad combination took place in New England during the nineteenth century. In writing it I have had three purposes: to organize and present a chronicle of events of economic and historical interest; to form a historical background for the consideration of the present-day problems of railroad combination in New England; and to present material which may lead to further knowledge of the forces behind the economic institution of railroad combination.
The method of treatment of the development of these many systems has been to note with considerable care each addition to each system (although I do not doubt that minor omissions will continue to crop up after publication). This has resulted in a very great amount of detail, some of which the reader may at times resent. It is my belief, however, that, were this material excluded, no satisfactory picture could be given of how or why these systems took on their present form.
That this study is limited to the nineteenth century is accounted for by the coincidence of the turn of the century with the comparative maturity of the present-day New England systems. In the case of the New Haven system, which was to control almost all the rest of the New England railroads, the break at 1900 comes on the eve of the presidency of C. S. Mellen, under whose leadership this expansion took place.
It is my intention that this study form the first volume of a study on railroad combination in New England, the second part of which will include the history of the attempted control of all the transportation agencies in New England by the New Haven road, an account of the actual operating unity of the roads during the World War, a discussion of the numerous plans, since 1920, for the rearrangement of the New England railroads, and a discussion of the combination problems of the present day. In that second volume an attempt will be made to discuss at greater length the economic forces which made themselves felt in railroad combination in this region in the hundred-year period from the late 1830's to the late 1930's. The present volume presents in detail the basic material for sixty of these one hundred years. It is concerned with the building up of the present-day systems. The period after !goo is notable for the changing intercontrol of these present-day systems by one another.
