A Pictorial History of Worl War II in Alaska and Northwestern Canada
It is fitting that the first printing of Volume Four of my Forgotten War series will be published in 1993, the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Attu and the occupation of Kiska. In the past decade I have been in communication with hundreds of veterans of the war in both Alaska and Northwestern Canada and am still amazed at the amount of information and number of photos that have surfaced. There still seems to be a great interest in this theater of operations from veterans, family members and even the younger generation.
There are numerous events going on in 1993 as there was in 1992, including a name change at Shemya Air Force Base and a ceremony in June at Attu to commemorate the battle. Several reunions of Aleutian veterans are taking place around the country.
The numbers of veterans are rapidly thinning and I hope these four volumes will perpetuate the memory of the campaign for future generations. There will possibly be a fifth volume if enough new information and photos appear in the future.
Several other books on World War Two in the area have been published and I urge my readers to seek them out.
