Fodors Railways of the World By Rogers Whitaker Dust Jacket 1977 443 Pages

TIME was running out, we kept telling George and Meredith Payne-Grayson, who, because they are English, are forever traveling the globe. They had circled it twice in cruise ships. Now, Kate and I hoped, they were ready for circling the globe our way-by land (a whole lot), by ship (upon occasion), and by plane (hardly at all). Time was running out because the railways of the United States (or so it seemed but a few years ago) would soon afford us no passenger trains at all, and the railways of certain other countries seemed moribund. Amtrak, in the United States, and a railway resurgence in other parts of the world have rather changed all that, but how could we know then? "Then" was at the end of a very long conference the four of us had been attending in San Francisco.
