When major steam locomotive operations ceased on North American railroads at the end of the 1950s, photographer and railfan Ken Kraemer did not give up on turning his lens toward steam locomotives. He continued to photograph excursions and steam tourist railroads around the country, and has thus recorded a personal 50-year photographic history of many of the locomotives that have kept steam alive, while also illustrating the reasons that steam has had such a timeless appeal to railroad buffs and the general public alike.
Beginning with pictures of the last years of steam locomotives in regular service, this book features over 250 photos to chronicle the 50 years of steam operations that have survived since the official "end of steam."
