This volume is the result of a study, begun eight years ago, of the early history of coal mining, both abroad and in this country. The scarcity of data and the reasons for it are mentioned later.
Many of the books whose names are in the reference list, and very many of the papers scanned, contained little or no information about coal; their names are included so that future students of the subject need not waste time examining them for detailed information about coal.
Much of the text consists of quotations, some of which are very long. These are used because the sources from which they came are scarce and difficult of access, and because our present viewpoint of coal is vastly different from the one of much earlier days. It was felt that the quotations used would give a much better picture of the feeling of those days than any paraphrase of them, or inferences drawn from them, was likely to do.
Some of the tables could have been omitted as having no present-day value, but were included because the data were difficult to secure and they had some historical interest. The historical part of the work is in the earlier pages, the tables which record the growth of the industry are in the later ones, so that they can be used separately by those whose interests are divided. It must be emphasized here that while these tables show larger outputs over the years than has heretofore been thought, that in practically every case where accurate data were found after an estimate had been made, the estimate was found to be too small.
Acknowledgement has been made throughout the text of the aid obtained from libraries and historical societies, and the grateful thanks of the author is given to all those in charge of these records. Their responses to requests for aid were always cheerfully given and many helpful suggestions were received from them.
Especial thanks are due Mr. Cuvier McGarr, who prepared the index and read the proof.
