Firing on the Pennsy A fireman on the Pennsylvania Railroad describes the last hurrah of the steam engine 1943-1947.  by Paul Dietz Soft Cover 2001 97 Pages
Paul Dietz is a retired life insurance agent with a very wide variety of hobbies. Besides the usual men's activities, like hunting and fishing, he propagates and grafts fruit and ornamental trees in his back yard nursery. He gives the trees to anyone who will give them a good home (like the old woman and her kittens). His grafting is not limited to trees; he grows tomatoes on potato vines and vice versa and grows both vegetables on a jimsen weed.
He likes to work with wood and makes furniture, grandfathers clocks, and gun stocks. He is also adept at metal work and has a collection of a hundred pocket knives, which he designed and hand crafted. He made three functional sterling hot air motors that derive their power from the expansion and contraction of hot air (they are not steam engines). When Paul's neighbors lose keys, they call him, as he is a locksmith.
Paul knows the location of Indian camp sites in the area, and he walks the fields looking for arrowheads and has a nice collection of artifacts.
Wild edible plants are another of his interests, and he says that many of the weeds that gardeners throw away should be on the kitchen table, such as chickweed, lambs quarters, purselane and dandelions. He likes to pitch horseshoes and play table tennis but admits that in a short while he will have to settle for a game of checkers.
Paul plays the piano by ear and used to sing with the Barbershoppers. His favorite reading material is a complete set of the Ohio Historical Society's yearbooks, or any book on archeology, botany or geology, but no fiction. He says that in spite of his many activities, some people consider him to be a couch potato. The reason: he doesn't play golf.
