DUST JACKET INTRODUCTION
Undoubtedly the most important and famous narrow gauge railway in the world, and certainly the doyen amongst narrow gauge systems, the Festiniog Railway has been known to the Author for almost half a century. This new history is based on his earlier works, but it is enriched with a wealth of new facts, these being the fruits of recent discoveries among hitherto unsuspected sources and backed by intensive fresh fieldwork.
For the first time the Railway is considered not only as a remarkable piece of engineering in its own right, but is treated alongside its quarry customers, so giving a unique insight into industry and transport inseparably linked for over a century.
