BIBLIOGRAPHY114
Baltimore's historic Fells Point has one of the most interesting backgrounds in American maritime history; the part played by its citizens since the 18th century has contributed to the success of the United States as a maritime power.
Norman G. Rukert has been associated with the Baltimore waterfront since he joined his father's terminal operating business at the age of 16. "The Fells Point Story" records his fondness for the Point and his special interest in the port's maritime activities.
From the time the adventurous Fell brothers, William and Edward, sailed from England in the early 1700's, up through the golden era of the Point, when shipbuilding boomed and the monied class bought land in both Fells Point and Baltimore Town, Mr. Rukert illustrates this history with anecdotes and details about life in the small community.
He writes of the transitional years, when the Point's fortunes declined as railroads and steamboats gained in popularity.
In the final chapter, the renewed interest in the neighborhood shown by both residents and other historically-minded people is well-documented. The rediscovery of the area has stimulated business and injected into the community the same spirit and optimism that has enabled Fells Point to play a major role in Baltimore's history.
