David E. Byers was born and raised in Southeastern Ohio in the area of the Federal Valley Railroad. As a boy, he spent many carefree days walking the tracks, trestles and tunnel of the line affectionately known to the locals as the "Punkin Vine". He also made numerous trips to the nearby division yard and shops of the Toledo & Ohio Central Railroad (New York Central) at Corning, Ohio where his grandfather operated a switch engine for the last years of his forty-eight-year railroad career.
Unfortunately, his obligation to obtaining a civil engineering degree at Ohio University in 1951, followed by two years in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and beginning a career caused him to be away from the area in the final years of operation and the demolition of the Federal Valley Line.
While he maintained an avid interest in railroading during his thirty-seven years as an engineering manager for a major communications company, it was only after his retirement that he was able to devote the time to research the history of the Federal Valley Railroad Company and its predecessors. His engineering background is reflected in the emphasis given to various aspects of the book such as line layout, maps and drawings.
